Behavorial Conditions

1 in 10 Americans suffer from depression at some point in their lives. This number is growing by about 20% each year. Anxiety is even more prevalent, with 1 in 5 Americans suffering symptoms of clinical anxiety. Together, they make up the two most common mental illnesses in the US. But the daunting fact is, only about 80% of those who suffer from depression and anxiety are being actively treated.

Although western medicine has made many serious advances in the understanding and treatment of anxiety and depression, many of the treatments still come with some hair-raising side effects, including weight gain, nausea, fatigue, insomnia, and blurry vision. Sometimes, the side effects of medication for treating anxiety and depression are anxiety, depression, and even suicidal tendencies!

Recent studies have demonstrated that the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach can be just as effective as some Western interventions, and with much less side effects. As reported in the 2013 Journal of Endocrinology, electro acupuncture was shown capable of slowing the body's production of stress hormones. In 2011, a study published in Neurosciences and Therapeutics found that acupuncture was as effective in treating anxiety as cognitive behavioral therapy. Even as early as 1998, the journal of Psychology Science published an article where it found that acupuncture was as effective as psychotherapy and medication. 70% of the participants studied reported a 50% improvement over the course of 12 sessions. In fact, many participants reported feeling relief after the first few sessions. If you suffer from depression or anxiety, why not explore TCM treatments? Besides the rapidity that acupuncture can provide relief, when performed correctly, Acupuncture results in few to no side effects. And the cost of treatment when compared to Western modalities pales in comparison. But even if you are already exploring treatments with medication or therapy, acupuncture can be a great adjunct therapy, allowing the mind and body to recover faster.
